The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) is an epic high fantasy trilogy written by English philologist and University of Oxford professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, with much of it being written during World War II, it was originally published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955.

LOTR is about the quest of the Fellowship of the Ring, a group of hobbits, men, elves, dwarves, and other creatures, to destroy the One Ring, an evil artifact created by the Dark Lord Sauron, in the fires of Mount Doom in the land of Mordor. The One Ring is a powerful artifact created by Sauron, the Dark Lord. It is made of gold and has a red stone in the center. The Ring gives its wearer great power, but it also corrupts them. Sauron seeks to regain the Ring so that he can use its power to conquer Middle-earth.

The Fellowship of the Ring is a group of nine companions who are chosen to carry the One Ring to Mount Doom and destroy it. The Fellowship is made up of Frodo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, and Pippin Took.
