History

Charlton Athletic Football Club was founded by a group of local businessmen and players at East Street, now known as Glentworth Street, Charlton on 9 June 1905. It is today one of the oldest professional clubs still in existence – only Nottingham Forest were formed earlier than them amongst current Football League teams – and has a long history of success. They first won promotion to Division Two (now known as League One) of the Football League from non-League football in 1907–08 and went on to win two Southern League championships during 1912–13 and 1914–15 before their relegation back to Division Three (now known as League Two). The club regained their place in Division Two after successful campaigns in 1920–21 and 1921–22 but were relegated again two seasons later into Division Three South.

Throughout their history, Charlton have made various achievements including winning promotion to Division One (now known as Championship) three times, gaining promotion back to the Premier League after numerous relegations and lifting several trophies along with other successes. Between 1947 and 1957 they reached 3 FA Cup finals only to lose all three while they also reached another two under Alan Curbishley's reign between 1998-2000 though lost them both too. In 1999 they won both UEFA Intertoto Cup as well as UEFA Cup Winners' Cup before suffering relegation from EPL subsequent season.

Successes

In 1988-89 season under manager Lennie Lawrence, CAFC achieved promotion back to Division 1 after beating Blackburn Rovers 4-3 on aggregate over two legs. They then gained consecutive promotions into Premier league where they finished 14th position despite having started life among pre-season favourites for relegation when they joined EPL for 2000/2001 campaign. This feat saw them break through financial restraints due to being promoted alongside Manchester City who had previously been bought out by new investments with supposedly limitless finances available.

The club also achieved notable cup successes throughout their history including winning both the UEFA Intertoto Cup as well as UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1999 and 1984 respectively – thus making them one of few British sides that managed double European glory within same decade.
