What does NCNP mean in CARDIOLOGY

The NICU Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Program is an interdisciplinary medical program designed to support and promote the growth and development of children who have had cardiac surgery in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This program helps ensure that these children have optimal physical, cognitive, and psychosocial outcomes.

Infants who have had cardiac surgery in the NICU and their families will benefit most from this program. It provides specialized care for high-risk newborns and offers support to families through various treatments, therapies, and resources.

The program can provide a comprehensive range of services including assessment and management of feeding, respiratory status, nutrition support, motor development evaluations, neuropsychological assessments, physical therapy recommendations, research opportunities, educational planning assistance, connection with parent/family resources and much more.

Yes – when a child is discharged from the NICU they will be referred to local primary care providers or specialty clinics depending on individual needs. The team at the NICU Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Program will provide ongoing communication between all involved parties to ensure continuity of care.

The team consists of cardiologists, neonatologists, nurse practitioners/managers, speech pathologists/language therapists specialists as well as representatives from community health teams such as lactation consultants and/or social workers.

The team works closely with parents providing them with up-to-date information regarding their child’s condition – this includes both medical information along with access to family resources wherever possible.

Parents can contact their local hospital’s NICU or pediatric cardiology department directly for more information on how they can access any available supportive services for their infant or family member(s). Services are usually provided inpatient but may also include outpatient visits if needed.

No – our programs involve outpatient visits where families make regular appointments according to their individual needs. Overnight stays should only be required in exceptional cases where necessary for treatment requirements.
