History

FONK was founded in 2013 by volunteer Monica O’Neill who had developed an extensive network in both North and South Korea, after spending 6 years living in Seoul between 2007 and 2013. Monica decided to launch FONK as an international platform for constructive engagement with North Korea, believing that the best way forward was to increase contacts, mutual understanding & support initiatives which could make societies on both sides of the border more inclusive & tolerant towards each other.

Mission

The mission of FONK is to provide a safe platform for constructive exchanges between North Koreans living abroad and those still inside North Korea. Through education, exchange programs and cultural activities, FONK strives to bring different communities closer together while also creating economic opportunities for ordinary citizens on both sides of the border. The organization believes that openness can lead to increased tolerance, respect and collaboration among all involved parties. In addition, FONK works towards helping bridge the gap between those unfamiliar with North Korea by raising awareness about its culture & people through various initiatives across Europe & beyond.
