What does BNGM mean in NAVY

The British Naval Gunnery Mission (BNGM) was an initiative undertaken by the British government shortly after the Second World War. Its purpose was to combine and improve gunnery technology and training practices of the Royal Navy, in order to ensure that the service would remain competitive with other international navies in the post-war era and beyond. The BNGM sought to develop better tactics for naval combat and gunnery training, as well as more efficient weapons systems for use at sea. In addition, it established new educational standards for both sailors and officers alike.

History

The Ministry of Defence initiated the mission in 1948, assembled from a cross section of personnel from all branches within the Navy. These included experienced officers from various backgrounds including engineering, navigation, operations research and fleet service. Following two years of research and development work, a report entitled "British Naval Gunnery Mission Report – 1948" was released outlining its findings. This document highlighted shortcomings in current training methods and provided recommendations for improvement regarding personnel management, teaching methods, equipment maintenance protocols, effectiveness of gunnery simulations and modernisation of weapons systems. By 1951 the BNGM had developed a series of innovative ‘Gunner’s Basic Training Modules’ which were then adopted across all divisions within the Navy as part of their basic training syllabus. These modules covered topics such as modern firearms techniques; target recognition; range calculations; optics; fire control principles; ballistics; ordinance recording systems; live fire exercises; anti-aircraft measures; bridge organisation for firing commands as well as ship handling at short ranges amongst others. In addition to these training changes being implemented throughout naval forces worldwide following the mission’s publication in 1953, new tactical doctrines specific to naval gunnery were established by experts consulted during this period such as Admiral Sir Edward Ashmore who emphasised accuracy over rapidity when engaging enemy ships or submarines or Rear Admiral John Woodward who recommended combined arms tactics on vessels combining aircraft carriers with surface fleets for optimal combat effectiveness over unprotected targets on land or sea.

What is a British Naval Gunnery Mission?

A British Naval Gunnery Mission (BNGM) was established to improve the efficiency and accuracy of Allied naval gunfire in the Second World War. The mission was sent by the British Admiralty to train, advise and inspect Allied sailors in techniques such as range-finding, drift correction and gunnery control.

What were the objectives of BNGM?

The objectives of the BNGM were to study existing Allied gunnery practices, evaluate their effectiveness, provide instruction in new methods where appropriate and bring back information on tactics and modern equipment used by enemy forces.

Who was part of BNGM?

BNGM consisted of 40 senior officers from the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). They were all experts in naval gunnery who had extensive experience in combat operations.

How long did BNGM last?

BNGM lasted for four years, from 1942 to 1946. During this time, over 1 million personnel were trained by the mission.

Where was BNGM based during its activities?

What sort of techniques did BNGM teach sailors?

Members of the mission taught sailors how to use spotting glasses to identify targets on distant ships at night. They also provided instruction on range estimation by triangulation with reference points on land or other vessels; drift correction; torpedo sights and anti-aircraft fire control systems as well as detailed instructions on how to maintain accurate records when firing guns during battle.

Was there any criticism against BNGM's activities?

Generally speaking no but some sailors complained that certain procedures weren’t necessary or applicable given their individual circumstances but all such criticisms were understood and considered carefully before moving forward with any course alterations.

How did BNGM prove successful in improving Allied naval fire accuracy?

In short order it became evident that Allied navies had improved dramatically due to changes made with respect to target acquisition ranging ammunition patterning among many others which resulted in fewer rounds being wasted allowing faster location tracking better coverage and greater accuracy overall.

Final Words:
The British Naval Gunnery Mission had an immense impact on how navies trained their personnel in post-war Europeand beyond. Its legacy is still present today with modern naval forces continuing to adhere to similar regulations based on those formulated during this time period. By introducing extensive modifications regarding personnel education, weapon maintenance protocols, fire control principles, simulation technologies amongst other considerations ; it successfully bridged eras between pre-war navy strategies & capabilities with those existing today. Thus we can conclude that without intervention by initiatives such as this one ; significant strides towards preserving territorial waters would not have ultimately been achieved.
