What does SUDP mean in PEDIATRIC

Sudden Unexpected Death in Pediatrics (SUDP) is an umbrella term to describe the sudden and unexpected death of an infant or child under the age of 18. The cause of death may be determined after a medical examination.

Some common causes of SUDP include suffocation, choking, drowning, SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, infection, trauma, and ingestion or inhalation of toxic substances.

Parents can take certain steps to reduce their child's risk for SUDP. These measures include making sure your child's sleeping area is safe; never smoking near your child; not co-sleeping with your baby; placing baby on his/her back to sleep; following vaccination schedules; and avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke and other environmental hazards such as lead dust or chemicals that could be toxic for children.

Infants who were born prematurely or those who have existing health conditions such as heart defects may be at greater risk for SUDP than those who are otherwise healthy. Additionally, babies who are exposed to cigarette smoke or lack adequate supervision while sleeping may also be at increased risk for SUDP.

If your child unexpectedly passes away you should immediately contact emergency medical services and/or contact a doctor at a hospital nearest you so they can evaluate your situation further and offer guidance as needed. You should also notify your local coroner or medical examiner so they can investigate further into the cause of death if it is required by law in your state/country.
