What does BEME mean in UNCLASSIFIED

BEME stands for Biologic and Epidemiologic Markers of Endometriosis. It is an abbreviation used to describe those markers or characteristics associated with endometriosis that are used to diagnose the condition.

Examples of BEMEs can include pelvic pain, irregular menstruation, infertility, pain during intercourse, and bowel or bladder symptoms. Other markers include elevated levels of certain hormones such as estrogen or progesterone, and higher levels of inflammatory cytokines in certain areas within the body.

Women who have been experiencing certain symptoms over a period of time such as pelvic pain, abnormal menstrual cycles, infertility or pain during intercourse may need to undergo a BEME evaluation to determine if they have endometriosis.

A doctor might conduct a physical examination and review medical history as part of their assessment for diagnosing endometriosis. They may also order tests such as an ultrasound or laparoscopy to determine if there is any abnormal tissue present outside of the uterus. Blood tests can also be done to measure hormone levels and inflammatory cytokines indicative of endometriosis.

There are various treatments available depending on the severity and location where endometrial tissue has grown outside the uterus. These can range from medication management to minimally invasive surgical techniques such as laparoscopic ablation or excision depending on individual circumstances.
