What is MART

MART combines two different types of medication with the goal of reducing exacerbations and providing people with better symptom control and improved quality of life. The two main components are maintenance therapy, which consists of low doses of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) taken daily over long periods. Maintenance therapy works by decreasing airway inflammation and reducing the number of severe episodes experienced by asthmatics over time. The second component is reliever therapy, which consists of short-acting bronchodilators taken as needed when an exacerbation occurs. Reliever therapy works by quickly widening the airways so that airflow is increased during an attack or flare-up. When used together, these two drugs provide both immediate relief from symptoms as well as long-term prevention from future attacks.
