What does BFR mean in FOOD & NUTRITION

The mission of Boulder Food Rescue is to create a more just and less wasteful food system by redistributing healthy, rescued food from where it is being discarded to where it is most needed in our local community.

Boulder Food Rescue works to reduce waste and increase access to healthy food in several ways. They rescue fresh, nutritious food that would otherwise be discarded and quickly get it into the hands of those who need it most. Additionally, they empower a volunteer network of “Food Rescuers” who donate their time to bike-powered food rescues which help ensure underserved communities have access to healthy food options. Lastly, they provide education around sustainable eating practices as well as skills-building programs for youth volunteers in order to bring about systemic change in the local community.

BFR accepts unsold fruits & vegetables, dairy products, eggs & proteins (meat & fish), canned goods, grains & legumes, baked goods, frozen items and pantry staples such as peanut butter or olive oil.

You can become involved with BFR by volunteering your time on a bike-poweredfood rescue route or donating financially online at https://boulderfoodrescue.org/get-involved/give/. You can also donate your time at special events or support their initiatives through corporate partnerships or becoming a sponsor!

Yes! BFR partners with over 200 organizations in the local Boulder County area including nonprofit organizations like Bridge House Community Table and Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA), schools like Columbine Elementary School and University Hill Elementary School, farmers' markets like Sprouts Market and Community Agriculture Alliance Farmers' Markets Program as well as many other partners like Intercambio Uniting Communities and First Congregational Church's Sunday Dinner program. This helps ensure underserved populations have access to healthy food options throughout Boulder County.
