What HLO Does

The primary function of Health Liaison Officers is to provide assistance to patients when needed. This includes helping with scheduling appointments, filing insurance claims, answering questions about diagnosis or treatment options, providing support during difficult times, and advocating for patient rights. HLOs also provide resources to medical professionals such as references for continuing education courses, covering shifts for vacationing colleagues, or connecting them with experts in their fields. To fulfill these roles effectively HLOs must have excellent interpersonal skills; be knowledgeable of various health care settings; have good organizational abilities; have familiarity with state-specific laws surrounding patient privacy; maintain up-to-date knowledge of new treatments and technologies in the field; and juggle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Qualifications

To become a Health Liaison Officer, individuals must possess certain qualifications. These include at least a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration (or similar), knowledge of areas within the hospital setting such as billing and coding procedures, medical terminology proficiency, experience working in a healthcare setting either as a provider or administrator. Additionally certification through a professional organization such as the American Association of Medical Office Managers provides added credibility to potential HLOs looking to begin their career in this field.
