What does PUH mean in MEDICAL

Peptic Ulcer Hemorrhage (PUH) is a medical term used to describe bleeding caused by the formation of ulcers in the stomach or intestines.

Prolonged exposure to certain medications, such as aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and steroids, can cause tissue damage resulting in the formation of ulcers that may lead to PUH. Other potential causes include chronic Helicobacter pylori infection, alcohol consumption, smoking, and stress.

Symptoms of PUH may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, inability to keep food down or pass stool/gas due to obstruction from blood clots or edema around ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract, bloody or black stools due to bleeding from ruptured ulcers in the digestive tract wall, fever and chills due to internal infection associated with necrotic tissue from ruptured ulcers.

Diagnostic tests for PUH involve imaging studies such as gastroscopy or barium x-ray studies to detect any gastric or intestinal ulcers or abnormal bleeding sites. Blood tests are also performed to check for anemia as a result of blood loss associated with PUH.

Treatment for PUH typically involves medications including antacids and proton pump inhibitors intravenous fluids for hydration and electrolyte balance endoscopic procedures like hemostasis or embolization for stopping profuse bleeding surgery for severe cases of uncontrollable bleeding.
