What does ISB mean in ACADEMIC & SCIENCE

The Independent Science Board (ISB) is an independent body established to provide scientific guidance and advice to help inform policy decisions related to environmental management and sustainable development. The ISB works to assist governments, industry, non-governmental organizations and other interested parties in achieving responsible stewardship of the environment.

The membership of the ISB comprises a diverse group of leading scientists from around the world who have a broad range of expertise on matters related to science and sustainability. They are chosen for their experience in areas such as ecology, natural resource management, economics, and technology.

All members are selected through an open call for applications that is issued annually. The selection process includes review by a Selection Panel that evaluates scientific qualifications as well as diversity requirements related to gender, professional background, geographic region and disciplinary expertise.

The ISB focuses on complex problems at the intersection of science and society that have been identified by governments or stakeholders as needing independent scientific guidance. Projects can include topics such as renewable energy sources, food security issues, climate change mitigation strategies and biodiversity conservation plans.

Once a project is accepted by the ISB, a working committee is formed comprised primarily of active members with experience relevant to that project's topic. This committee works with experts from outside the board to review evidence-based literature on issues relevant to project scope before developing final recommendations for policy consideration.

Public engagement plays an important role in how recommendations are developed. Throughout each project cycle, committees use various methods—including public surveys, workshops with stakeholders, interviews with experts—to ensure that public opinion is taken into account when crafting final recommendations.

While it does not conduct primary research itself, members of its working committees may draw upon recent studies relevant to their projects when providing advice or making recommendations. In addition, it collaborates with external partners who commission studies in support of its work programs.
