History
The idea for establishing the Association started with the initiative of Li Liao at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2017. A steering committee was set up with Li Liao as chairperson along with six other academics from various universities in China such as Peking University, Renmin University of China, and Tsinghua University. The goal was to form an authoritative academic platform that promotes collaboration among researchers in China while also connecting Chinese scholarship with other nations around the world. After several rounds of discussions and revisions over two years, the committee finally completed a draft version of what would become ACCL’s constitution on January 8th 2019. In August 2019 it became officially registered at Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau as a non-governmental organization (NGO) with 60 founders from Mainland China and Taiwan. Since then it has held several international conferences on topics such as ancient and modern Chinese culture, global trends in literary studies, cross-cultural exchanges between East Asia and Europe/America etc.
Goal
The goal of ACCL is to advance comparative research through interdisciplinary collaborations among scholars across all linguistic backgrounds—from modern languages to classical languages—and facilitate meaningful dialogues between east Asian studies communities (East Asia including Mainland China & Taiwan). Through this process, we are able to understand how cultural identity has been shaped over time based on comparisons within cultural contexts or merged ones from different civilizations or regions. By studying how these similarities influence each other today we seek to bring forth new knowledge about shared traditions and customs that have continuously influenced our thinking since antiquity up until present day societies.
