What does RDH mean in DENTAL

RDHs provide services such as cleaning and polishing teeth, taking and recording medical histories, conducting exams, taking x-rays and other diagnostic tests, exposing radiographs of teeth and soft tissues for diagnosis by a dentist, applying topical anesthetics such as fluoride treatments and sealants, removing deposits from teeth such as plaque or calculus (known as scaling), performing root planing procedures, providing guidance on diet choices for healthy teeth and gums, teaching proper brushing techniques, explaining how smoking impacts oral health and more.

Most RDHs work in dentists' offices or private practices. They may also be employed in insurance companies or state or local public health departments. In addition they may be found working in long-term care centers/facilities or hospital settings caring for special needs patients.

Yes! In order to become an RDH individuals must have completed at least two years of college education or have earned a four-year bachelor's degree in the field. They must then pass either the National Board Exam given by The American Board of Dental Examiners or take a different qualifying exam approved by the individual state along with applying for licensure from that state's board of dental hygiene. Depending on where they will practice there may even be additional requirements such as CPR certification or coursework in local anaesthesia (numbing medications).

To be successful as an RDH one must possess excellent communication skills when interacting with both patients and colleagues alike since patient care is highly collaborative between dental hygienists and dentists. One should also display strong clinical skills paired with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology so that proper diagnosis can be made regarding disease states. Lastly good problem solving skills are key when it comes to addressing any obstacles that may arise during treatment or earlier screenings/evaluations.
