The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) was established on 1 April 1998 as a State University based on the provisions of State Legislature Act 18 of 1994 at Belagavi (formerly Belgaum) in Karnataka, India. It is named after Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya whose birthday (15 September) coincides with "Engineer's Day" in India. This day (15 September) marks his birth anniversary and is celebrated by Engineers all over India every year with great enthusiasm and reverence.
