What does CTAR mean in REHABILITATION

CTAR stands for Combat Trauma and Acute Rehabilitation. It is a medical program designed to provide early intervention, recovery and psychological Support services to combat veterans. This includes mental health services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and vocational counseling.

CTAR is intended to help veterans of the armed forces who have experienced symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), or other psychological issues as a result of their service. Additionally, those veterans who are in need of physical rehabilitation following an injury or illness may be helped by this program as well.

The duration of the program varies depending on the individual's needs and progress. Depending on the severity and complexity of their trauma related issues, the length of time may range from a few weeks to months. Generally speaking, it is best for most individuals to complete the full program in order to ensure maximum recovery benefits.

The Department of Veteran Affairs provides funding for this program so there is no cost associated with it for eligible participants. All participants are required to meet certain eligibility criteria in order to qualify for assistance through the program.

To apply for the Combat Trauma and Acute Rehabilitation Program you must first contact your local VA office or visit the VA’s website at www.va.gov/healthbenefits. You will then be provided with an application package which includes instructions on how to complete your application. An eligibility specialist will review your application and contact you once they have determined whether you are eligible or not.

During treatment you can expect to receive mental health services such as talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Physical rehabilitation aimed at restoring mobility, strength, balance, coordination and function muscles may also be provided where applicable. There may also be referrals made for social work services if needed during treatment as well as any necessary educational or employment resources needed after completion of treatment.
