What does VRC mean in REHABILITATION

The main duty of a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor is to help individuals plan meaningful careers and find suitable employment. This includes assessing the individual's abilities, skills, interests, values, and experiences, as well as helping them build self-confidence so they can succeed in their chosen profession. VRCs also however provide assistance with other tasks such as job placement services, career counseling, educational guidance, and independent living skills training.

A VRC helps people with disabilities gain skills that will allow them to obtain meaningful employment by providing specialized services such as career counseling to create an individualized plan for future success. Additionally, the counselor can provide access to educational resources needed for continued learning within the chosen field and connect individuals with community organizations or employers interested in hiring candidates with aptitude.

VRCs typically work with individuals who have physical, mental or emotional disabilities that limit their employability or ability to function independently daily life activities. These may include deafness or hearing impairments, vision loss or low vision impairment, mobility limitations due to physical disability or spinal cord injuries etc.

Generally speaking, becoming a vocational rehabilitation counselor requires obtaining a master's degree in psychology/counseling/social work and then completing additional certification requirements provided by the national board for certified counselors (NBCC).
