What does VALE mean in LAW & LEGAL

VALE stands for Victim Assistance and Law Enforcement. This term is used to refer to the collaborative efforts of police and social workers to assist victims of crime, provide access to legal services, and create a safe environment for victims to report crime.

The two major groups working together under the VALE system are law enforcement personnel and social service providers. Law enforcement officers work with victims directly by providing medical assistance, investigation services, legal advice, and other resources that can assist in the recovery process. Social service providers work with victims on an individual basis by providing counseling, advocacy services, housing resources, financial assistance, and other necessary supports.

VALE helps address some of the most pressing issues facing victims today — such as timely access to justice; improved reporting processes; better support systems; increased safety measures; greater accountability on behalf of perpetrators; more comprehensive treatment plans; improved resources for families dealing with violence; and improved communication between law enforcement agencies and social service providers. Victims often experience a heightened sense of security when they know they have reliable law enforcement officers assisting them throughout their ordeal.

Through collaborative efforts between police departments and social service organizations, victims feel more comfortable reaching out for help when they need it. VALE also promotes an overall culture shift among criminal justice professionals towards understanding how best to interact with victims effectively, efficiently,and with respect. Furthermore, through improved communication between both types of organizations there is less duplication of effort which saves time and money while simultaneously increasing victim safety.

While not available everywhere just yet due to differing models from jurisdiction-to-jurisdiction, more municipalities are beginning adopting this model as it has been proven successful in many areas already implementing it.
