What does BSK mean in PHYSIOLOGY

The exact cause of BSK is not known, but it has been linked to chronic eye conditions such as glaucoma or uveitis, long-term exposure to ultraviolet light from sunlight, trauma or infection of the eye, contact lens use, and advanced age.

BSK is usually diagnosed with a slit lamp examination, where a doctor will check for signs of keratopathy and possible scarring or calcification on the cornea. If further testing is needed, your doctor may order additional tests such as an ultrasound scan of the eye or Visual Evoked Response testing.

Treatments for BSK vary depending on its severity and symptoms. In mild cases, treatment may include increased tear production (using artificial tears), removal of any foreign material from the eyes (such as contact lenses), and avoidance of potential irritants such as dust and smoke. In more severe cases, doctors may prescribe topical steroid drops or medications to reduce inflammation around the area affected by keratopathy. Additionally laser procedures may be used to remove any excess cells that are causing blockage within the eye's drainage pathways.

Complications from BSK can range from mild discomfort to severe vision loss if left untreated. Possible complications include painful swelling due to scarring on the surface of the cornea, astigmatism due to changes in shape of the cornea, glaucoma resulting from increased pressure within your eyes and even complete loss of sight in extreme cases.
