What does BSE mean in NEUROLOGY

BSE stands for bovine spongiform encephalopathy and is an infectious, progressive neurological disorder of cattle.

BSE was first identified in the United Kingdom in 1986. It likely originated through the feeding of rendered sheep to cows, which contained PRIONS — misfolded proteins that cause this disorder.

The symptoms of BSE are varied and include impaired movement, paralysis or tremors, blindness, decreased milk production and decreased social interaction with other animals.

Unfortunately there is no cure for BSE. Treatment includes supportive care such as pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication. Prevention can be achieved through measures such as avoiding the feeding of rendered sheep to cows, adequate heat sterilization of feed materials and strict monitoring and control of animal movements.

While it is unlikely that humans can contract this condition from cows directly due to species barriers, people may still be at risk if they consume infected food products made from contaminated beef or other animal tissues.
