What does ALTA mean in LITERACY

ALTA stands for Adult Literacy Tutors Association.

ALTA provides a variety of literacy support services, such as tutoring and career counseling, to adults with varied educational needs.

To become an ALTA volunteer tutor, you must first complete an application form and have two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your teaching or tutoring experience. After submitting your application, it will be reviewed by the organization’s executive committee and then you may be selected for an interview.

To access the online tutor resources offered by ALTA, you need to register as a member on the website. Once you have signed up for an account, you will have access to a wealth of information on lesson plans, activities and other helpful resources that can help improve your tutoring skills.

Financial assistance is only available to students in need who cannot afford tuition fees or other expenses related to attending classes at approved learning centers. If you are interested in applying for financial assistance, please contact one of our offices and we will guide you through the process.

Yes! ALTA has materials available in Spanish, French and German which can be accessed through our website or via special request if necessary. However, tutors should inform themselves about the language level prior to helping out learners with material written in these languages.

Yes! Tutors must meet all qualifications set forth by the organization including having basic qualifications such as a university degree or comparable qualification; passing a criminal background check; being knowledgeable about multicultural issues; having a passion for teaching adults; and possessing strong interpersonal skills as well as good planning abilities. Furthermore, they must also follow all regulations & procedures established by each individual center they wish to teach at.
