What does ACC mean in UNCLASSIFIED

An Area Control Centre is responsible for providing coordination and direction of air traffic to maintain safety and separation of aircraft operating in particular airspace.

Airspace around an ACC is managed with the use of radar-based tracking, which allows Controllers to monitor aircraft movements and issue instructions for avoiding collisions or other dangerous manoeuvres.

Personnel working at an ACC typically include Air Traffic Controllers who are responsible for ensuring safe conditions while Aircraft may also have Flight Data personnel who track aircraft performance, meteorology staff to monitor weather conditions, communication staff to facilitate effective communication with pilots, as well as ground control staff managing departures/arrivals, routing clearances or altitude restrictions.

There are numerous Area Control Centres throughout the world including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific region, South America and Africa. ACCs are typically located near airports or other locations where there is significant air-traffic activity.

In the event of an emergency situation at an Area Control Centre, Controllers will take prompt action to ensure safe navigation for all nearby aircraft by rerouting flights away from danger zones or issuing altered altitudes for existing routes in order to avoid hazardous conditions. In addition, Controllers may be required to contact nearby ground-based emergency services such as medical teams or fire departments if further assistance is needed.
