What does DAC mean in DISABILITY

Disability Action Council (DAC) is an independent organization based on the Human Rights Commission of Australia. It was established in 2006 to promote and advance the rights of people with disabilities and their families. DAC works to ensure that everyone has access to services, opportunities, and protection from discrimination.

DAC provides a range of services such as advocacy, information sharing, policy development, and consultation with governments, communities, service providers and individuals. They also provide outreach programs for those who need support or assistance from the organizations they are involved with.

DAC's services are open to any individual with a disability or their carer regardless of their background or situation. People who do not have a formal diagnosis may also be eligible for certain programs offered by DAC.

To avail of DAC’s services, an individual must first complete an application form which is available on the Disability Action Council website or through other affiliated organizations. Upon submitting the application form and providing appropriate documents related to one’s disability status if needed, you will be contacted by a representative from the organization for further information about becoming a member or partaking in activities that DAC offers.

The majority of programs and activities provided by DAC are free-of-charge. However, there may be some program fees needed depending on the activity or service being availed. Fees are typically determined on an individual basis based on availability and other criteria requirement considerations.

Membership at Disability Action Council is annualised; meaning membership runs from January 1 through December 31 each year regardless of when it was purchased during this period. Enduring memberships can be purchased at any time during this period but those memberships would end with calendar year 12 months later than its purchase date.

Advocate membership at Disability Action Council allows individuals to participate in high level projects around disability issues including research projects and consultations with government departments around proposed legislation affecting people with disabilities across Australia. Individuals interested in becoming advocates must apply through the advocacy membership page on their website.

Advocate Members have full autonomy when undertaking activities associated with their advocacy role as long as these activities remain within the scope of benefit for people with disabilities across Australia and align with Disability Action Council’s mission objectives. A dedicated staff member can provide additional advice regarding specific tasks should it become necessary.
