What does FPOA mean in PSYCHIATRY

The purpose of the Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age (FPOA) is to advance the science and practice related to psychiatry that focuses on aging. The FPOA provides educational, scientific and professional expertise in the diagnosis, management and treatment of older adults with mental health needs.

To be eligible for membership in the FPOA, applicants must be a psychiatrist specializing in geriatric psychiatry or an allied health provider such as a psychologist, social worker or psychiatric nurse practitioner. Professional members must also possess certification from their respective body or regulatory college.

Members at FPOA have access to a wide range resources including special rates for conferences, discounts on publications, leading-edge research updates and access to supportive networks with peers around the globe. Additionally members can participate in mentorship programs that enable them to connect directly with experienced practitioners who can provide career guidance and support.

Clinical members require medical certification by either their respective regulatory body or specialty college as well as certification relevant to working with older adults such as General Adult Psychiatrist Qualification or Gerontological Certificate qualification depending on their field. Other members may need additional qualifications depending on their profession or area of specialization within age-related mental health services.
