There are three main types of HCLs:

• GHS labels: These labels follow the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), which is an international standard for hazard communication. They use pictograms, signal words, and hazard statements to convey information about the hazards associated with the chemical.
• DOT labels: These labels are used for hazardous materials being transported by ground or rail. They use specific colors and symbols to indicate the type of hazard (e.g., flammable, corrosive, or poisonous).
• WHMIS labels: These labels are used for hazardous products in Canada. They use numeric codes and hazard symbols to indicate the hazards associated with the chemical.

HCLs should be placed on the immediate container of the hazardous chemical. If the chemical is transferred to a different container, the HCL must be transferred to the new container as well.
