There are three types of breech presentations — Frank Breech, Complete Breech, and Footling Breech. In Frank Breech position, the baby's bottom or legs are flexed at the hips and knees, with their feet near their bottom. In Complete Breech position, the baby's knees and hips are flexed and the baby is positioned cross-legged. In Footling Breech position, one or both of the babies feet are below their bottom, near or below their cervix.

An ultrasound performed during your pregnancy will be able to determine if your baby is in a breech position. Your health care provider might also feel your abdomen to check for fetal positioning during any prenatal appointments.

The cause for most breech presentationsis unknown; however there are certain factors that may increase your risk for having a breech presentation such as multiple fetuses, uterine abnormalities, intrauterine growth restriction (when an unborn baby does not grow at an expected rate), placenta previa (when part or all of the placenta covers some or all of your cervix), and being overweight or underweight prior to pregnancy. Additionally smoking while pregnant can also increase your chances of having a breech presentation.

Any time that an unborn baby presents in an abnormal method there could be potential complications associated with it such as cord prolapse (when umbilical cord slips into birth canal before delivery) placental abruption (placental separation from uterine wall which can cause excessive bleeding), or impaired growth due to lack of oxygen to baby while waiting for delivery.
