Friends United With The Richmond Shelter (FURS) is a volunteer-based group of people dedicated to helping animals in need in the Richmond region. We are an all-volunteer, non-profit organization committed to finding homes and providing assistance for adoptable and stray dogs and cats until they find their forever homes.

There are many ways to get involved with FURS. You can become an active volunteer at one of our adoptable events, foster a pet, help us organize special events such as fundraisers or adoption drives, or donate supplies or cash donations. Adoption fees vary depending on the age, breed, and size of each animal that FURs works with as well as medical expenses incurred during their stay at our shelter. Generally speaking, adult cats range from $50-$100 and puppies typically start at around $200+. All adoption fees go towards covering our costs in order to provide quality care for our animals so all donations are greatly appreciated!

Yes! All adoptees receive spay/neuter services prior to going home along with any vaccinations deemed necessary by our veterinarians. Additional services such as microchipping may also be available depending on the individual needs of each pet prior to adoption as long as additional funds have been raised through donations for these expenses.

Yes, all potential adopters must complete an application form which provides us with information about how well suited you are for owning a pet as well as giving us insight into your lifestyle so that we can match you up with a pet most suitable for your situation. Once approved, you will be contacted via email when it’s time to come meet your new companion!

Yes - we ask that all adopters complete paperwork indicating that they understand their legal responsibilities when caring for their adopted pet. We also ask that anyone interested in adopting a puppy or kitten be over 18 years of age or accompanied by another adult who has signed the adoption paperwork.

For cats - dry kibble not only helps maintain dental health but also aids digestion since it contains a balanced mix of carbohydrates & proteins needed for optimal growth & development; wet canned food offers higher nutritional value than dry food & is great source of hydration because it contains up to 70% moisture; feeding treats made specifically for cats (i.e tuna treats) ensures they maintain optimal health levels given their unique dietary requirements compared other pets.
