History

LUPD was created in 1950 when Lehigh University founded its own security force under the direction of Chief John E. Yeo Jr. Before that, university security had been handled by local police forces or volunteer organizations. Chief Yeo was later followed by Chiefs Edward Culp (1969) and Joseph Burroughs (1997). Since then, LUPD has grown into a fully-staffed police department that includes both sworn officers who have full policing powers as well as non-sworn public safety officers who handle other tasks such as crowd control or lost-and-found items.

Duties

The LUPD’s primary duties are to protect life and property on campus, including enforcing the laws of Pennsylvania as well as university policies and regulations. They investigate crimes committed on university property or involving university affiliates and respond to emergency calls for service from anywhere within Lehigh's jurisdiction. In addition to law enforcement activities, LUPD also provides educational programs related to safety topics such as alcohol use, sexual assault prevention, personal safety tips, bicycle safety, fire safety, identity theft prevention and more.
