History

The Batten Kill Railroad was originally chartered in 1891 as part of a planned network of narrow gauge lines connecting various communities in southern Vermont. The line opened in 1894 with two locomotives and three passenger cars providing service between Manchester and Bennington townships. Unfortunately, due to financial mismanagement, the railroad went bankrupt just two years later and ceased operations. It wasn't until 1897 when it was purchased by New England Central Railway (NECR) that regular rail service resumed on this trackage. Since then, NECR has maintained ownership and control over BKRR operations; which include freight services along nearly 30 miles of track between Salem and Shaftsbury Townships.

Modern Operations

Today the BKRR handles freight traffic for various industries such as paper mills, plastic manufacturers, dairies, lumber yards, beverage distributors and others located or relying heavily upon easy access to goods via rail transport from the mainline railway system conveyed by NECR’s extensive coverage of tracks throughout Vermont and its neighboring states including upstate New York. In recent years more resources have been allocated into capital improvements along NECR-owned trackages including modern technologies such as PTC (Positive Train Control).
