History

WXCO was first established in 1924 as a locally owned station under the call letters of WHRY. Over the years it has changed ownership several times and its format has evolved quite a bit since its inception. In 1947 WHRY began broadcasting 40s, 50s and 60s rhythm and blues and oldies as well as some classic rock — a trend that continues today. By the late 1960s, after changing its call letters again to WBJQ-AM, the station had switched to a progressive rock format featuring bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. In 1978 WBJQ-AM switched again to an adult contemporary format only to go back to classic rock under the name “Kool Kat Oldies” in 1985. Then in 1993 came another switch with the station taking on its current moniker of “WXCO/The X”. This move saw the station expanding its repertoire by introducing some country music into the mix and becoming more reliant on syndicated programming from other stations around the United States.

Programming

Today WXCO broadcasts primarily classic rock while also playing some country hits occasionally throughout the day. The morning show is hosted by Bill and Janell who bring you information on what's going on in both Wausau and around Wisconsin as well as playing plenty of great tunes from all genres of music including classic rock, current hits and oldies alike. They even invite listeners to be part of their show each morning so you don't want to miss out! Other shows feature various types of music ranging from 80's New Wave to classic soul jams as well as sports talk on weekends when big games are happening around Wisconsin (especially Packer football!).
