What does WGCOM mean in OCEAN SCIENCE

The Working Group on the Commercialization of Meteorological and Hydrological Services (WGCOM) is a United Nations body established in 2007 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It's purpose is to facilitate the development and effective implementation of commercialisation strategies for meteorological and hydrological services.

Meteorological services provide information related to weather conditions, such as forecasts, climate analysis, satellite images, and air quality measurements. Hydrological services provide information on water resources, including river flows, rainfall, snowpack levels, groundwater levels, reservoir levels, dam inflow/outflow rates, etc.

WGCOM promotes a variety of commercialisation strategies that can be used to make meteorological and hydrological services more accessible and profitable. Examples include providing public-private partnerships to share risks; increasing access to data through web portals; developing mobile applications; expanding market access through international collaborations; promoting research into new technologies; developing cost-efficient delivery systems; increasing investment in infrastructure development; improving legal frameworks; investing in education and training; and encouraging mutually beneficial cooperation with local communities.

WGCOM defines commercialisation as "the activities necessary to enable the sustainable production, marketing or exchange of products or services for financial gain." This includes activities such as pricing models, revenue sources, marketing plans, competitive analysis projects, regulatory compliance issues and financial planning initiatives.

The main objectives of WGCOM are to develop robust strategies for promoting the use of meteorological/hydrological services in order to support sustainable economic growth throughout member states. Additionally it seeks to increase access and affordability for these important natural resources which will ultimately benefit society at large.

Membership is open to all organizations that have an interest in enhancing global understanding about how weather impacts socio-economic sectors within their region or country. It is not limited only to those associated with meteorology or hydrology.

Communications within WGCOM are maintained via face-to-face meetings at least once a year held in collaboration with regional partners. During these meetings members discuss best practices related to policy reform initiatives along with providing technical advice related developing projects while also collaborating on joint activities such as knowledge sharing sessions through workshops and seminars.

Resources provided by WGCOM include capacity building materials such as handbooks on copyright laws surrounding meteorology/hydrology data transfers as well as sample documents outlining mutual benefits related public private partnerships amongst other topics. Additionally they provide stakeholders with opportunities for skills transfer through webinars hosted by experts from around the world.

Currently there are no grants available from WGCOM however they do host several conferences each year where they may offer funding opportunities specific areas that require further development support.

Yes becoming an official partner comes with responsibilities which include adhering policies set out by WGCOM related topics such as anti-corruption laws environmental sustainability measures regulations surrounding data protection among others. Additionally partners should commit towards actively participating any relevant conferences seminars workshops initiatives brought forth by this working group.
