Overview

UMOC is a student organization that promotes appreciation for nature and an active lifestyle. We seek to provide resources for students interested in exploring the outdoors by organizing activities such as hikes, backcountry camping trips, paddling excursions, snowshoeing adventures, mountain biking rides and more. These events are open to all skill levels and abilities — no experience necessary! Through these activities we hope to connect like-minded individuals as well as introduce newcomers to various outdoor recreation pursuits. We strive to create an environment where members can safely participate in these activities while learning something new each time they go out with us.

Mission

Our mission at UMOC is first and foremost safety. We prioritize education by having some of our most experienced members lead trips so that everyone will stay safe on their outings into the wilderness. We also emphasize responsibility by encouraging members not only physically but also mentally prepare for their excursions before heading out into the outdoors. Lastly, we aim to promote respect both for nature and each other by being conscious of protecting natural resources and being mindful of one another's needs throughout all our events.

Can I join if I don't have any experience with outdoor activities?

Absolutely! We welcome beginning and experienced outdoorspeople alike. Our experienced trip leaders will provide guidance throughout the trip so that all participants feel safe and secure while learning new skills. No matter your level of experience, we would love for you to join us!

Is there a cost associated with joining?

Membership fees vary from year to year but typically range from $15-$20 per academic year depending on other fees associated with the club such as transportation and rental costs for equipment or lodging expenses for overnight trips when applicable.

Are there other ways I can get involved in UMOC?

Yes! While participating in our trips as a member is always great fun, there are many other ways you can get involved with the club aside from going on trips. You could become a Trip Leader which involves organizing & leading smaller groups on outings; become a board member; help out with maintenance & repairs at our gear shed; work on outreach projects such as tabling events & workshops; or helping design/implement club safety initiatives like our Leave No Trace program.

Do I need my own personal gear & equipment to participate in UMOC events?

Not necessarily - we have a wide variety of gear available through our gear library which includes items such as climbing harnesses, tents & sleeping bags. We do suggest however that you consider acquiring your own personal camping attire such as waterproof boots & jackets since this may come in handy during certain events such snowshoeing or backpacking.

Are Pets allowed on club outings?

Unfortunately no. Due to safety concerns (i.e potential wildlife encounters) we ask that pet owners refrain from bringing their pets along on our outings regardless if it is a day trip or an extended one.

Is UMOC open year round?

Yes! While most of our organized excursions occur during the academic semester (September-May), we still host various socials & exploratory outings over summer break/holidays so please make sure to keep an eye out for those events.
