Background
RLW was founded by railroad engineer August A. Waller in 1879. Waller had worked as superintendant at a succession of railroads in Pennsylvania prior to founding his own business. The company was located on 13 acres of land near Philadelphia, PA and soon began producing steam locomotives for both passenger and freight service. Over the years, RLW would go on to manufacture thousands of units making it one of the most prolific manufacturers during this era. Beyond steam engines, RLW also produced specialized rolling stock such as refrigerator cars and flatcars for industrial applications as well as passenger cars designed for luxury travel.
Being part of the industry
RLW quickly gained notoriety in the railroad industry for providing quality product at competitive prices due to their efficient production methods and engineering prowess. Thanks to their reputation within the industry they were often sought out by some of the largest railroads including Union Pacific Railroad who purchased over 30 locomotives from RLW between 1895-1915 as well as New York Central Lines who accounted for over 10%. While not all railroads chose to purchase from RLW or any other major manufacturer there were still many small operators who sought out their services which helped solidify their presence within the industry.
The decline & legacy
By mid-20th century RLW's success began to slowly come to a halt due to competition with newly emerging diesel locomotive manufacturers, a trend that continues to today’s day with electric models becoming more widely used. A little known fact is that while most people think that diesel locomotives completely replaced steamers it wasn't until DL&N (Delaware Lackawanna & Western RR) retired its last steam engine from service in 1958 that marked end of era which dates back centuries before our time. Even though modern technology seems have largely replaced their products there will always be those tributes scattered throughout country reminding us where it all started; without them we wouldn't have progressed this far today.
