The History of RAGBRAI

The first RAGBRAI was held in 1973 as an idea conceived by John Karras and Donald Kaul, two Des Moines Register newspaper columnists. They proposed that a group of cyclists ride across the state of Iowa on July 25th that year in order to draw attention to bicycling and rural America. The route covered 428 miles and began outside Sioux City at the Missouri River bridge heading west into Carroll County before looping back eastward to end in Davenport on August 2nd. Karras and Kaul created a voluntary organization called “The Des Moines Sunday Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa” (RAGBRAI) which organized what was essentially a large party on wheels all throughout rural parts of Iowa where people rarely ever got an opportunity to have a taste of big city life.

The Process

Each year, RAGBRAI announces a new route well in advance so that riders can plan accordingly for lodging and other details related to their participation. Over 11,000 participants register for the event annually with several thousand more unregistered cyclists also joining in on the fun. There are usually small fees associated with registering for the ride itself however participants generally need to cover all other costs including transportation to/from start & end points, lodging along the route or camping out each night depending upon preference as well as food expenses throughout the week since there are no formal meal plans available during RAGBRAI.
