What does PHA3 mean in NAVY

Photographer's Mate (Aerial Photography) Petty Officer Third Class is a rating in the Unites States Navy. It is the third class rank of a Petty Officer, who is responsible for operating cameras while aboard aircraft and vessels, as well as providing photographic services on land.

Some of the duties of a Photographer's Mate (Aerial Photography) Petty Officer Third Class include developing photos taken by other petty officers and themselves; operating, maintaining, and repairing aerial cameras and related equipment; following military regulations when handling photographs; providing photographic support to air-crews; and preparing photographs for display.

To become qualified for this position in the US Navy, candidates should have completed training from accredited post-secondary institutions or have equivalent professional experience. They must also meet physical requirements set forth by the US Navy, pass several examinations and interviews, attend special technical schools and complete general military service school training.

Creative skills are essential in this role as a Photographer's Mate (Aerial Photography) Petty Officer Third Class. The duties require a great deal of creativity to capture interesting aerial photos that capture true moments in time. This means being observant with an eye for composition and color balance. Candidates should also demonstrate good customer service and communication skills to work effectively with both personnel onboard ships or aircraft as well as team members on land.

With additional training and education, those working in this role may be able to advance through additional ranks within the US Navy such as Advanced Photographers Mate or Chief Photographers Mate. Advancement can also come through additional specialty language qualification like Spanish or German. Those that serve honorably may retire from service after 20 years with higher level rankings achieved earlier opening more doors to civilian opportunity upon retirement.
