What does ICDL mean in COMPUTING

The International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) is a certification programme that teaches individuals essential computer and web-based skills. The programme provides students with hands-on knowledge and experience, enabling them to confidently apply technology in their work and life.

The ICDL includes seven modules; Basic Concepts of IT, Using the Computer and Managing Files, Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentations and Information & Communication. Each module consists of a self-study eLearning program as well as an online test which must be passed before the student can become certified.

No. There are no prerequisites for taking the ICDL tests and anyone can register for them regardless of their previous qualifications or general knowledge about computers or the internet.

The amount of time needed to complete the program depends on individual's skill level with computers/technology and how much study time they're able to dedicate each day/week. However, most people should be able to earn their certificate within 2 months by studying part-time or up 4 months if studying full-time.

After completing all seven modules, participants will need to book sessions at an approved Test Centre where they will sit each of their online exams one after another on a single occasion within one calendar month period and be assessed by qualified invigilators. Upon successfully passing all seven examinations a printable certificate will be issued listing your name along with your respective scores for each exam sat.

No – however the minimum age requirement is 12 years old for undertaking assessments at test centres (although some localised exceptions may apply). If you are aged 13 – 18 years old parental consent is required before assessment registration can occur.

Results are valid indefinitely provided re-assessment does not occur. If re-assessment is necessary due to changes made in training material or policy then periodic re-assessment may be necessary depending on duration specified in local regulations.
