What does GTCS mean in MEDICAL

A generalized tonic—clonic seizure (GTCS) is a type of epileptic seizure characterized by a loss of consciousness, stiffening of the body and violent, rhythmic jerking movements. It is also known as a grand mal seizure.

Symptoms include sudden loss of consciousness, uncontrollable muscle contractions and convulsions, rapid heart rate and increased blood pressure, temporary confusion afterwards and exhaustion following the event.

The exact cause of GTCS is not known but it can be triggered by certain environmental factors such as flashing lights or sudden loud noises as well as medical conditions including epilepsy and brain tumors.

Treatment for GTCS may involve anticonvulsant medications to help control seizures and physical therapy to improve strength and coordination after seizures. Other treatments may include lifestyle changes such as dietary adjustments or stress management techniques.

In most cases, GCTC is not life-threatening though it can cause injury due to falls or other accidents while having a seizure. However, if seizures occur frequently or last for an extended period of time they may lead to neurological problems or complications from low oxygen levels due to difficulty breathing during seizures.
