The exact cause of GDD is often unknown; however, possible causes may include genetic disorders, exposure to toxins or drugs during pregnancy, and complications at birth.

GDD can have both physical and psychological effects on a person. Depending on the severity of their condition, they may experience delayed physical maturation, difficulty with activities of daily living such as eating and dressing, problems with communication and problem solving abilities, attention difficulties or hyperactivity, poor impulse control and poor social skills.

Treatment for GDD is tailored to each individual's specific needs. It may involve occupational therapy or physical therapy to help develop motor skills; speech-language therapy to foster improved communication; educational services to help understand basic concepts; psychological counseling to help manage behaviors or feelings related to the condition; medications to manage underlying conditions associated with GDD; and resources from family members or other supports to assist with caregiving responsibilities.
