What does AHV mean in HOUSING & AMENITIES

AHV works to reduce homelessness and improve living conditions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through providing support for those experiencing housing stress or those in need of assistance. This includes programs such as emergency relief funding, crisis accommodation support, pathways into permanent housing, tenancy skills education and cultural connection activities.

AHV is funded primarily by the Victorian Government's Department of Health & Human Services, however it also receives some funding from philanthropic bodies, peak organisations, service providers, local government organisations and other sources.

Assistance from AHV is available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria who are experiencing difficulty finding safe or secure accommodation. This includes families who may be homeless or at risk of homelessness due to financial difficulty or any other reason.

In addition to providing advocacy services for individuals or families experiencing difficulties with accessing accommodations suitable for their needs, AHV offers a range of support services such as emergency relief funding; linkages into specialist support services; advocacy when dealing with landlords; tenancy sign up assistance; advice on state regulations related to renting; pathways into permanent housing options; tenancy skills education activities; and cultural connection activities which promote strong ties with community members and promote self-determination initiatives within Indigenous communities.

Non-Indigenous people looking to contribute positively towards improved Indigenous outcomes are encouraged to partner with us through volunteering roles, sponsorships or donations so we can continue our work in building strong Indigenous communities through increased access to secure housing options.
