Structure
The FDFL is divided into two grades; Senior and Reserve. The purpose of these two grades is to provide everyone from beginners to seasoned veterans with a great opportunity to experience the sport of Australian Rules Football. Each grade consists of five teams, with four clubs each playing one round-robin match against every other team in their grade on a home/away basis across fifteen rounds of competition. At the end of the season, the top two teams play off in a Grand Final.
Playing Conditions
The matches within each grade are played under slightly different conditions than those experienced at professional AFL level due to space limitations at some grounds, such as Leake Street Oval in Footscray, which hosts many FDFL events. During regular season games three quarters are played instead of four quarters, while Finals matches consist of four quarters conforming to AFL regulations.
Competition Levels
The Junior Division runs from Under 11s (popularly known as 'Auskick') through to Under 17s and provides younger players with an introduction to rivalry and club culture before beginning their journey in Senior Football or Reserve Grade. To ensure maximum participation numbers in each age group all clubs field teams across this division meaning you may play rivals from both your own club's senior side or another club throughout the year!
