What does DDH mean in PHYSIOLOGY

Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is a condition that affects the hip joint in infants and children. It occurs when the ball-and-socket joint of the hip does not develop properly, which can lead to instability, pain, and other serious issues with mobility.

Some common risk factors for DDH include being born breech or female, having a family history of DDH, and being part of certain ethnic groups such as Native American or Inuit populations.

DDH may be diagnosed through physical examination during an infant's well-baby checkup or if a parent notices signs such as clicking in one or both hips during movements like crawling or walking. Imaging tests such as ultrasound or an X-ray may also be used to diagnose it definitively.

Treatment options vary depending on severity but may include wearing a special brace to help reposition the hip socket in mild cases or, in more severe cases surgery to correct it. Physical therapy can also be part of treatment following surgery or bracing to help restore proper movement and strength in those areas.

If left untreated, developmental dysplasia of the hip can lead to chronic pain and decreased range of motion in adults due to degeneration over time as well as early arthritis development due to increased stress on other joints associated with walking and running on misaligned legs. Therefore prompt diagnosis and effective treatment with braces or surgery are important for optimal outcome after adulthood.
