Procedure Overview

D&E begins with the dilation of the cervix—the entrance to the uterus. This is typically done with osmotic dilators like laminaria sticks (a type of seaweed) that gradually open up the cervix over a period of several hours or even days. Once it’s adequately dilated, additional dilators are inserted into the cervix along with forceps or other instruments to grasp onto sections of fetal tissue. Suction devices attached to tubing are then inserted through the vagina to gently remove these pieces from inside of womb. Finally, any leftover tissue in uterine cavity is removed by curettage, which involves using a spoon-shaped instrument called a curette to scrape them away.

Risks and Complications

Like many other surgical procedures, D&E comes with some risk factors such as infection, bleeding, and damage to internal organs due to misuse of tools or improper technique. Possible side effects also include cramping, nausea/vomiting, dizziness/lightheadedness, headache/migraines–all common symptoms following any abdominal surgery. Furthermore, there is also potential risks related to anesthesia and medications given during procedure; however they can be minimized by working closely with an experienced healthcare provider who specializes in this area and has access high quality medical supplies necessary for correct performance of D&E.
