A Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) is an animal health care professional who has successfully completed a formal program of study and passed the Certification Examination administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards. In addition to providing general medical care for animals, CVT's perform complex medical procedures such as dental cleaning, radiology, anesthesia and surgery assistance.

To become a Certified Veterinary Technician, individuals must possess at least an associate degree or higher in veterinary technology from an AVMA-accredited program and have documented 500 hours of satisfactory experience in veterinary technology under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian within the past 5 years.

Typically, it takes between 2-4 years to complete an accredited program in veterinary technology followed by passing the Certification Examination administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.

CVTs specialize in areas such as animal anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nutrition, lab tests & diagnostics, anesthesia & surgery assistance, first aid & emergency medicine, reproduction & neonatal care, dentistry and animal behavior.

CVTs provide essential support for veterinarians during routine visits as well as critical situations during urgent or emergency cases. They monitor vital signs of animals before and after treatments; prepare medical records; administer medications (both prescription and over-the-counter); set up surgical instruments; give injections; assist with diagnostic procedures; take X-rays; counsel owners on preventative healthcare measures. Additionally they assist with euthanasia when needed.
