What is CIAT?
CIAT was founded in 1967 by the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations as part of their initiatives to improve agriculture in Latin America. Since then, it has grown into an intergovernmental institution with its headquarters based in Cali, Colombia. The main goal of CIAT is to help developing countries facing hunger and extreme poverty become self-sufficient through improved agricultural practices. CIAT works to achieve this goal by researching crops that can be cultivated with limited resources, improving land management techniques, promoting gender equality, and creating policies that support rural development.
How Does It Work?
CIAT's work is focused on four key areas: crop improvement for food security; water management for improved livelihoods; climate-smart landscapes; and resilient market systems development. To carry out its research agenda, CIAT works with university partners across Latin America as well as other regional scientific organizations such as the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). Additionally, CIAT collaborates extensively with local farmers through participatory research projects that involve farmers interacting directly with scientists in order to adapt and design new strategies based on local knowledge.
