History of the Program

The Lions Youth Exchange Program began in 1973 as part of LCI’s commitment to providing humanitarian service and promoting international understanding. Every year since then, the program has grown in scope and size. Currently, more than 70 countries are involved in the LYEP, sending approximately 650 youth exchanges during each two-year period. In addition to traditional student exchanges within certain regions or countries, there are now specialized programs focused on fine arts or sports exchanges as well as those that match students with host families in their own language or culture.

Purpose of the Program

The primary goal of the Lions Youth Exchange Program is to promote international understanding by bringing together people from different nations who have never before had contact with one another. By immersing these students into a foreign culture for a few months at a time, they become better informed about international issues and gain an appreciation for various cultural norms and values which can be carried over into their daily lives. The exchange also allows them to form friendships with people from around the world while gaining a greater sense of global responsibility through their participation in activities such as volunteer work.

Benefits of Participating

Participants who take part in this program can expect not only personal development but educational growth as well. Through their involvement in cultural activities associated with the exchange such as staying with local families or attending school abroad—participants are able to gain first-hand knowledge about various cultures and customs they may not have been exposed to before while learning more about themselves in the process. Additionally, many schools offer additional academic credit or coursework relating to international studies upon successful completion of a youth exchange program.
