History
Fort Worden was built during the Spanish-American War in 1898 as part of an effort to defend Puget Sound from foreign invasion. After WWII, Fort Worden was converted to a state park by Washington State Parks. The mission of Fort Worden then shifted from one of military defense to protecting its priceless natural resources and providing educational opportunities through local schools and universities. In recent years, numerous community organizations have been formed around preserving Fort Worden's history and legacy. The mission of FWAC is to advise on preservation efforts related to Fort Worden while promoting its use as a resource for learning opportunities throughout Washington State.
Goals
The primary goals of FWAC are fairly straightforward. It seeks to promote public knowledge about the cultural significance and environmental benefits associated with Fort Worden while educating locals about responsible stewardship of this historical site. Additionally, it advocates for balanced economic solutions ensuring that economic development activities aren't detrimental to surrounding areas or wildlife habitats near Ft.Worden itself.
